  • On Deadly Ground 1994

    ★★★ Watched 08 Jun, 2012

Seagal's sole directorial effort, fueled by the box office returns of "Under Siege". Surprisingly free of akido action, it is replaced by Eskimo spiritualism. It is exceptionally strange, spearheaded by Michael Caine approximating an American accent and black hair (as black as the oil he peddles).

It's a bit slow, but the poster image pretty much tells you where this is all going. And it is about as sincere as an action movie gets. You can tell Seagal really does not like exploratory oil drilling in pristine wilderness.

Regardless of its flaws, you should probably see it for the infamous Slap Fight scene alone.

  • Xanadu 1980

    ★★★½ Watched 27 Apr, 2012

Gene Kelly classes up this one much more than it deserves to be, even as the songs get stuck in your head for days (and days). Best enjoyed with a group of friends. Drunk friends.

Kitano's best film. Essentially an existential crisis develops amongst a group of yakuza. How this unfolds on an Okinawan beach says much through very little.

Also, I've watched this film so much I can watch it without subtitles now.

In many ways this is a long-form music video, but it is the BEST long-form music video. Prince plays it cool while Morris Day gets the best lines. All of it is surrounded by the music. The music!

My first two viewings were both in 35mm with like-minded folks. You want people who will howl with delight at the audacity of this movie, because that is what it is... 80s audacity exemplified.
