A couple of over-saturated, fantasy hipsters contextualise their waking lives within the structural and aesthetic tenets of a range of dusty genre movies.

Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby

    ★★½

Despite its sickly opening, this sour treat resolved its arc in the final act and began to win me over, but there was just too much convulsive banality and vomit-associated collateral damage in the first half of the film to tip the bilious balance. That said, there's a nice, Salty 90s soundtrack to season some of the less bulimic moments, and plenty of breadcrumbs leading back to the director's superior Freeway.

There must be a horror story behind how the filmmakers failed to convert this premise into a quality coming-of-age caper. It certainly has the ripest of ingredients with which to boil up a fantastic stone soup, but even a coin-operated Jennifer Connelly can't execute a piping-hot delivery. John Hughes penned and produced this in a pair of jeans with a very high waistband, I would imagine.

Largely uninspiring, rotating talking heads. Some cool clips.
