I love that this Japanese movie exists. It’s probably now one of my favorites of the “Sci-Fi in the immediate wake of Star Wars” films, mainly due to its ambition. It blows my mind that people could have walked into a theater and watched this when it was new. I wish it was better, but I still kind of love it. I really wish this was in HD or on blu-ray

In a lot of ways the ’60s were made for Richard Lester. This film is odd, even for him. The sequence with the bed is inspired. A little surprised this won a Palmes d’Or, but not in a bad way.
