Neither as awful as I feared it would be, or as great as nearly everyone else seemed to think it was. Some good moments of Spaghetti Western homage in a film that could have used either expansion or tightening. The usual Taratinian attention to detail, love of cult actors (and I can't deny that I got very excited when I saw Denis Christoper show up), and forgotten by normals movies (I was shocked that neither of my companions knew who Franco Nero was, or why QT bothered to show him). QT fans will eat it up, QT haters will hate it.

Had some minor reservations, but overall I loved this flick...very impressed at how well it did with the feel of the characters. Next time I hope we get a better menace, but otherwise tip top.

Finally caught this last week and really enjoyed it. Perhaps not quite as good as the last installment, but a fitting conclusion with great moments.

Solid drama/thriller based on a real incident. Great casting, maybe a bit too much of standard Hollywood beats.

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★★ Watched 13 Jan, 2013

Not exactly disappointing, because my expectations were so very low, but, as many have observed, too long, trying to hard to be Lord of the the Rings Jr., and not enough of Bilbo's story in favor of turning Thorin into a noble figure. Possibly worse in my opinion is Jackson's broadly comic CG fight scenes that go on for days.

  • Prometheus 2012

    ★★★ Watched 06 Apr, 2013

Saw it on my friend's large, 3D high def TV. Looked amazing. Beautiful effects. Story was mostly pedestrian, occasionally strained to "say something" about the human condition and mostly fails (though it is interesting to see it pick up some of the threads in Scott's Blade Runner). The characters are almost universally frustrating and irritating, despite a good cast. I'm not sure why I was supposed to either love or hate this, though I suppose it could sting Alien mega-fans as a disappointment. I think it would have been a much stronger movie WITHOUT the Alien connection.

I need to see it again to know for sure, but felt like Anderson's best since The Royal Tannebaums, possibly even since Rushmore. I think the period setting and child leads help temper his usual twee-sensibilities (because we tend to accept those elements in children's stories and in nostalgia rather than in the modern day and with adults). Loved the Scout stuff, made me recall things I'd forgotten for years.

Good, but not great. Glad to see someone doing something different for a change.

  • The Hunger Games 2012

    ★★★ Watched 09 Nov, 2012

Well made (mostly good performances, high production values, well shot action) but the story never really grabbed me. Katniss is a fairly dull character and the opponents never really sparked for me. Spent a lot of time thinking of other Seventh Victim variants from The Tenth Victim to The Running Man to Mean Guns (no, really, Mean Guns) to Battle Royale. It's unfair to call it a rip-off of Battle Royale, certainly, but it is interesting to compare and contrast…

  • The Big Lebowski 1998

    ★★★★ Rewatched 14 Nov, 2012

Either I'm getting old or overexposure to the film's jokes has dimmed my enthusiasm for this somewhat. Yes, it's still a great parody of Noir detective movies, and yes, it still has a great soundtrack and some wonderful scenes, but somehow it didn't quite grab me as much this time around. It's astounding that it's nearly 15 years old, I'll tell you that.

Great cast, great production value, but missing something.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001

First time watching this after reading the book and it was an interesting experience. Things my mind ignored now popped out at me. I still dislike Jackson's characterization of Gimli and Legolas, which I picked up reading the book, but there are fewer differences than I imagined. Hard to imagine how it could be radically improved as an adaptation, though it might be nice if Jackson was a little bit more subtle (example: I don't recall everyone's emotions being expressed so "large" when reading it, and things like the Hobbit digging around in his ear and smelling it).
