  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★★★ Watched 27 Aug, 2012

After watching all of the other single films, I watched with a sense of heightened anticipation, and a measure of dread thrown in. Part of me was excited to see a group of heroes in their own right thrown together in a mish-mash of powers and scenes, and similarly, dreading the very same thing.

However, who else but Joss Whedon could do all of that, and make the film great, funny, spectacular, awesome, sad and victorious at the same time.…

    Wow. Simply wow.

Christopher Nolan promised a fitting end to his Batman trilogy, and boy, he did not disappoint. The film, on so many levels, simultaneously inspires, awes, overwhelms, answers questions, ask more questions, leaves doors wide open while slamming some firmly shut.

In reviews I read before I watched the film, and since, I've seen people criticise the film, the ending, the premise, and largely, the main villain - Bane. One of the reasons I expect this is, is…

  • Skyfall 2012

    Wow. Simply wow.

Not just a Bond film, but a film about Bond. A film that supersedes all expectations of how good the film was touted, Skyfall is a modern tour-de-force in filmmaking, scripting and acting. A film that, dare I say, won't be topped for a long time.

Having watched a lot of the Bond films, more commonly the recent ones, Bond never felt like an assassin to me. He felt more of a token British icon, full of…

  • Looper 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 12 Jan, 2013

This is one of the best films I've seen in recent months, and it's nothing to do with the story, or the futuristic setting. It has everything to do with the characters, and the nuances you don't expect from a film of this genre.

Set in the near future, I really love how this is presented as normal and the film doesn't try to sell the idea of the future to the viewer. Hovercars, futuristic buildings, a split civilisation with…

  • Inception 2010

    ★★★★★ Added

Prior to The Matrix, I hadn't seen a film that triggered so many thoughts and brain processes. Until, that is, Inception.

Crafting a simple premise - a heist - with some mind-jiggery-pokery, Nolan and Zimmer (music) have created a behemoth of a film that will not only leave people's jaws on the floor for a long time, but their fingers firmly scratching their head too. In a good way.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2012

    ★★★★ Added

After quite enjoying the previous trilogy of films with Tobey Maguire, except the emo-Spidey bit from the third film, I took to reading the comics and I realised what everyone else was saying about the films.

This film, however, is more akin to the comics, and all the better for it. Where the Sam Raimi trilogy felt like they were commercialising Spider-Man, this sticks true to the books, with a cocky Peter Parker, a nice partnership with Gwen Stacy and…

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011

    ★★★★★ Watched 28 Apr, 2012

After high hopes of seeing this film after the reviews and general buzz on Twitter, I wasn't disappointed. Possibly tainted because I haven't read the books it's based on or watched the original movie, regardless, I found it in parts harrowing, spellbinding, cinematic, tense and most of all, amazed by the sheer quality of the film. Backed up by an amazing Trent Reznor-scored soundtrack, and you have the makings of a modern masterpiece.

  • The Matrix 1999

    ★★★★★ Watched 13 Jun, 1999

I've put the original date I saw it as I still have my cinema stub for the film, as it was the first film I ever watched at the cinema.

Anyway, if you've read my blog, you'll know that The Matrix and its sequels are my favourite ever films, opening my eyes to not only an amazing set of films with cracking effects and story telling, but a new concept and opinion of religion and faith.

    Until Inception, nothing came…

What can I say that hasn't been said before? Even by today's standards in film and effects, this stands head and shoulders above 99% of films showing that Spielberg just has that knack fro creating timeless films.

The script is still great, acting amazing, and the idea still unmatched. Combining animatronics with effects instead of relying on just CGI, the dinos feel real and the surround sound on the Blu-Ray really immerse you in every chirp from the jungle and roar from the Rex.

    Amazing.

  • Dredd 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 19 Feb, 2013

Having seen the Judge Dredd with Sly, and since reading a few 2000 AD books, I can safely say that this is the better film by being... just so much better.

Dredd sticks to the comic book formula so much better than the original, and as such, becomes the better film for it. No lingering toe-to-head shots, no hammy dialogue, no tongue-in-cheek parts that made the original feel a comedy at times.

Focusing on what the Judges do best -…

  • Iron Man 2008

Not only is this a blockbuster film full of impressive effects and cinematography, but it's also backed up by an impressive cast, especially the pairing of Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow.

For me, this is one of the best comic book films I've seen.
