American Psycho 2000 ★★★★★

Rewatched Jun 30, 2012

I have to admit that I was never a big fan of American Psycho until today. I have seen it before and couldn't understand what all the hype was about. Today I realize my large mistake. American Psycho is one of the funniest, most fucked up satires I have ever seen.

Christian Bale is absolutely stunning as the sociopath Patrick Bateman. The difference in his speech from wooden, rehearsed nonsense to passionate violence is something to behold. Without Bale, this film would be little more than a sick movie; with him, it is funny, scary, and absolutely memorable.

The story itself is interesting as hell. Following this psychopath through his day-to-day, including how many crunches he does in the morning, to what exfoliator he uses in the show, is fascinating. Director Mary Harron hits every visual cue on the head, and it's beautiful to watch at even the most disgusting moments.

From the sheer hatred of Paul Allen's business card, to the guy who thinks Bateman is hitting on him when he tries to strangle him in the bathroom, Harron does everything right with American Psycho. Almost every scene is memorable, and that's a feat in and of itself.

American Psycho is pure gold.
