Eric Gillam’s review:
At first I thought Project X was going to be the type of film that I absolutely hate. A bunch of stupid teens throwing a huge party to become "cool" yeah, sure however, in the first few scenes this film had me absolved into the story,
Maybe it's the fact that I'm a huge fan of the Cinéma vérité techniques but I did not completely despise Project X, the acting was rather decent from the three main characters and another contributing factor would have to be that the events just continued to get more outrageous as the movie progressed most of which actually made me laugh.
Obviously the party was going to be a complete disaster but, the film kept me second guessing myself as the characters kept getting away with more and more which is probably one of the saving graces in making this bearable.
The character development was more in depth and greater than what I expected after reading about this film, Tom the main character went through so many emotions as the night progressed and actually made me feel for him at some points. His best friends were the stereotypical "loser" types that come standard with any teenage party at an attempt to become popular. Costa the storyteller who knows way too many people and JB the "loser within the losers" the fall guy who's always there being made fun of. These three successfully (and I use that term very loosely) host an amazing out of control party and are well equipped and prepared to work within the situations presented to them and don't just miraculously solve the issues.
For a Film based almost entirely on one day/night the time management was excellent, scenes didn't seem to stretch on for an extended amount of time which made the entire film flow at an excellent rate. Transitional shots of generic party scenes could of been toned down a little but overall it worked well with this Project.
Relate-able characters, easy to recognize settings and decent acting along with a clear beginning, an action filled middle and the aftermath of an ending make Project X a good Film overall, way surpassing my original expectations from watching the trailers
