Oh wow, that's a sweet connection. had no idea. You know I've been meaning to re-watch Midnight Express for ages; maybe I should do a Midnight Express-American double feature.
I think the movie poster was the films biggest problem. I believe the general movie going public was mislead by seeing Clooney running with a gun with that 'I'm gonna getchew' face. What was delivered was a very different movie.

The poster, and probably the trailer too. But it did make $16+million on it's opening weekend, which it wouldn't have had a chance at otherwise. I would imagine a lot of the $20 million budget was the cloonmeister, so maybe they were desperate to make sure it made money.
But hey, we got something brilliant like you said. I don't feel very sorry for the people who were misled :)
It is a cool connection too. I honestly didn't realize it until I saw the IMDB pages, which was probably inevitable because of how often I watch this movie
