A clever, well-directed picture, but when compared to Wes Anderson's oeuvre - a conspicuous, ever-present, undeniable influence - the film comes across wanting. The film so clearly draws from this resource that one can't help but make comparisons. Unfortunately, Submarine is neither as witty or engaging.
