Theme: Nihilistic
Tough. Depressing. Bleak. Feel bad. Nihilistic. Call 'em what you want, there are some films out there that are difficult to watch, but we subject ourselves to them anyway, hoping to find some kind of truth in them. Some of them turn out to be brilliant in all the madness, some not so much. In no particular order, the darkest films I've seen so far. Have yet to see Frontier(s), looks good! The Human Centipede (First Sequence) 2010
There may be a touch of dark humor to it, but The Human Centipede ends on a downer.
-
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) 2011
Ouch. Ugh. Blech.
-
Funny Games 2007
Evil.
-
The Stoning of Soraya M. 2008
One of the toughest films I've ever sat through, more like a window than a movie. Instead of distancing you from the atrocities of mankind, it just draws you closer to the truth, and that makes it particularly painful.
-
The Children 2008
Breaking taboos left and right.
-
An American Crime 2007
No happy endings.
-
The Girl Next Door 2007
Less shiny than the Ellen Page version.
-
High Tension 2005
I think of High Tension as a beautiful romance film in some twisted way, but it's still an incredibly well made and dark journey while it lasts.

A Serbian Film 2011
There are many things to A Serbian Film which makes it particularly nasty and difficult to watch, including but not limited to the graphic sexual violence and involvement of young children (even infants). If you have any doubts whatsoever, you should not see it.
