Django Unchained 2012
While the Candie Land portion came close to the indulgent plodding pace that's plagued several of his recent films, the first third and the final third were among the most enjoyable in QT's career. One must wonder what it could have been if it'd been played consistently for emotion instead of for jokes, but the jokes (mostly) hit, the violence is stylish, and the film looks and sounds great. Most surprising: Foxx gives the best performance.

The Avengers 2012
Any flaws I may have found were erased by the multiple goosebump-inducing and eye-mist-creating moments of pure geek ecstasy. A wonderfully structured, character-driven blockbuster. Hulk rules.

The Dark Knight Rises 2012
Maybe my favorite of the trilogy, due to my love for campy one-liners and action movie cliches. It's a shame Nolan directs with that humorless tone and generally blah action sequences.

Silver Linings Playbook 2012
Sloppily constructed, tonally scattershot, but always sincere. The main three actors (Cooper, Lawrence, DeNiro) carry it. Second film in a row where either Russell is exploring how audiences react to bizarre behavior in the sick or he's straight up mocking them-- at times it's hard to tell. The second half of the film, which is pure romcom, plays better than the first.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012
Only 4/5 on its own, but the 48 fps earns at least an extra half star by itself. Warts and all, the parts that work are phenomenal. Usually the term "breath-taking" doesn't apply, but in particular the Stone Giant fight doubled my pulse. Lighter in tone than the first three, but delivers similar pleasure.

Prometheus 2012
Brilliant in spots, frustrating in others. Visually gorgeous, if the characters are undercooked.

Moonrise Kingdom 2012
Probably his best since Rushmore. A lovely film. Balances its humor and its melancholy perfectly, never falling off the tonal tightrope. Might bump it to five upon rewatch.

The Cabin in the Woods 2012
As original a horror movie as we've seen in years. The final thirty minutes might be some of the most fun you'll have in 2012.
