This had way more of a Coen Bros. vibe than I expected from the previews, which is always appreciated, mixed with a Cronenbergian interest in the flesh as a site of pleasure and pain. The sound design is something to behold, with bodies squelching and slapping and straining, as are pretty much everyone's hairdos. I'm not sure I totally bought the love story at the center but I certainly bought Kristen Stewart's commitment to the material. She remains one of our most fascinating modern performers. Defiantly weird in a way I really enjoyed, even if not everything worked for me logically.

Beat the Devil 1953
Truman Capote co-wrote this so you know it's one of the bitchiest films of all time. The plot barely hangs together but it's great fun. Shoutout to Jennifer Jones and Italy's most indefatigably cheerful sailor as particular delights.
