I'll admit to having no great understanding of the allure of the mythic American Old West which seems mostly like an ugly time full of ugly people. So I don't know why I keep watching Peckinpah movies. Luckily this one has its downright bizarreness going for it along with its beauty (Dylan's anachronistic performance being the most delightful element.) As with much of Peckinpah's work there's several great set pieces, but it never quite ends up feeling like it adds up to much, at least for me. And the female characters as little more than sentient tits still grates. Still when "Knocking on Heaven's Door" kicks in on the soundtrack, most of this can be forgiven.
