Scott McMillin’s review:
I was a fan of the novel, but hadn't read it many years. The film is quite possibly the best adaptation of a Jim Thompson novel yet and a fantastic neo-noir film that deftly subverts many of noir tropes. Very brutal and contains scenes from which the viewer might have to shut his or her eyes. This is a difficult story to film, but Winterbottom does a great job -- everything felt pitch-perfect. First rate acting and production design. My wife turned to me halfway through the film and said "this guy's a psychopath." I replied, "Yeah, there's a bit of clue in the film's title about that..."
