Long time Trekkie here, old enough to have seen the original series (aka TOS) on TV when it first aired. The TV versions had gotten stale and the TNG movies had run their course. Faced with a "Kobayashi Maru" task, J.J. Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman made Star Trek "cool" once again.
