Lee Scovell’s review:
This movie has been sat on my shelf for an age now and only with the help of my twitter chums did I watch this tonight, and now I feel like an absolute dumbass for leaving it this long. What a corker!
The tension oozes from this picture with such menace I found my heart rate was unusually high and this is in no doubt due to the excellent storytelling and the performances were top drawer from all, special mention has to go to Jacki Weaver as the family matriarch, all smiles and kindness on the outside, while inside holds a crime lord with murderous intent when it comes to the protection and well being of her boys. One of which is played by Ben Mendelsohn who plays one of the most eerily scary characters I've seen for a long time.
So if like me you were a little apprehensive about watching this, don't be. For you will be ultimately rewarded with one of the best crime dramas of recent years. There is a reason this has been dubbed by The New York Times as "An Australian answer to Goodfellas".
3 1/2 for me, but still really good.
awesome film...
the part with air supply song.. uffffff.. classic
Yeah, absolutely. I won't be able to hear that song any more without thinking of this movie. It's kind of great that directors nowadays are taking safe MOR songs and making them dangerous. A la Enya's 'Orinoco Flow' in Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Ben Mendelsohn's performance is truly gripping, I'm glad that the U.S. have picked him up for some work, loved him in Killing Them Softly
For some reason I haven't got round to see Killing Them Softly. I should really pull my finger out and watch it. Knowing that Mendelsohn is involved will focus my efforts to do so.
