  • Midnight in Paris 2011

    Grant Berridge Grant Berridge ★★★★

I love Paris, and this film made me very nostalgic for the city. A subtext of the story is that simply strolling around a lively city at night with no purpose will expose you to new and exciting experiences. I find that idea very compelling and romantic.

There is a strong fantasy element to the film, and even some low-key time-travelling (although it's not explored deeply enough to excite sci-fi fans), but the film is overall closer in pitch to…

Woody Allen surprises me with this amazing romantic comedy. The acting from everyone especially Allen is great. The writting was very well done and It had me laughing till the very end. Definitely, one of the best films I have ever seen. Woody Allen, your a genius!

  • Whatever Works 2009

    naaatan naaatan ★★

Genius existential asshole meets idiot cutesy girl...... romance ensues.

Hoped for so much more with it being Woody Allen and Larry David together in the same place, but nothing really manifests here.

The Woody Allen trademarks are all here, along with the feeling of being underwhelmed.

  • To Rome with Love 2012

    Philip Price Philip Price ★★★½

I guess Woody Allen was slightly insulted in 2006 when he wasn't asked to direct one of the shorts in the compilation tribute to the city of lights titled Paris, je t'aime. There were plenty of high-class directors that contributed to the project and it happened right on the cusp of Mr. Allen's tour of Europe. In not getting to attribute a short film to the collection he seems to have decided to create a film of shorts himself. In…

  • Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask 1972

    ACEZ ACEZ ★★★★ 2

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* But Were Afraid to Ask is one of Woody Allen's earliest efforts (specifically, his fourth one), and it is Woody at his most juvenile and hilarious. Basically a parody of the book of the same name by David Reuben, the film is divided into seven vignettes each depicting a certain story of a sexual nature.

Like I said, this is a very solid, hilarious comedy film, with Woody completly ripping apart this…

  • September 1987

    Lee Howard Lee Howard ★★★½

I first sat down and watched SEPTEMBER when I was about two thirds of the way through Woody Allen's prodigious body of work. Renown for his penchant for re-shoots and his dissatisfaction with the finished product of his own films (Allen still maintains Manhattan should never have seen the light of day?!) Allen actually made SEPTEMBER twice.

Unhappy with the pacing of his original cut Allen recalled the cast and crew only to find several key actors tied to other…

  • Manhattan 1979

    AS AS ★★★★½

One of Allen’s greatest films. Brickman & Allen’s screenplay is pure genius. Woody Allen is the greatest because you can never watch his films too many times. I howl with laughter all throughout this film. One scene that kills me every time is when Emily starts reading excerpts from Isaac’s ex-wife’s book: “He was given to fits of rage; Jewish, liberal paranoia, male-chauvinism, self-righteous misanthropy and nihilistic moods of despair. He had complaints about life but never any solutions. He longed…

  • Woody Allen: A Documentary 2011

    Jamie Sherwood Jamie Sherwood ★★★★★

So The first question I had when confronted with this documentary about the life and work of Woody Allen was: 3 hours? Really? You see, as much as I love Woody Allen, which is a lot, a 3 hour documentary on pretty much anything needs to keep the audience engaged for that long, and I had serious concerns that this would be a lot of filler, especially considering there was a 2 hour cut that hit the cinemas last year.…

Hilarious satire. Woody Allen shows sheer brilliance and genius work in even his early work and even in early work, Keaton and Allen still have pitch perfect chemistry.

  • Annie Hall 1977

    Joe Breal Joe Breal ★★★★

"Hall" is a film that is classic Woody Allen. There are no rules in his film-making and direction and there are no pop culture topics that are safe from his neurotic sense of comedy. Since the film came out eight years before I was born, I have to admit there are several jokes I don’t get. Doesn’t matter. Whether he’s performing standup or dealing with lobsters in the kitchen, Allen’s brand of comedy is pure genius and, if you aren’t…

  • Woody Allen: A Documentary 2011

    Jay Jay ★★★ 3

    Trailer

Love him, loathe him or just find yourself totally indifferent to him, there’s simply no denying that Woody Allen is one of cinema’s most accomplished directors and writers. With well over forty films to his name and having pointed his neuroses, paranoia and wit at every genre from slapstick to thriller, from romance to drama and even the supernatural, it is utterly impossible to cram his life into any documentary, even one such as this which comes in at…

  • Love and Death 1975

    Charlie Derry Charlie Derry ★★★★

I was pleasantly surprised at how hilarious this was, something I was not expecting at all. Its slapstick style was complimented incredibly by the over-use of sarcasm, an attack of clichés, and Woody Allen's typical deconstruction of love (and I guess of death, too). A clever parody of Russian literature, its references are easy to pick up, and the dialogue, one of Allen's most genius qualities, is exceptionally brilliant. The third collaboration between Allen and Diane Keaton, and their pairing before Allen's breakthrough Annie Hall, their chemistry is spot on, and it is through their leads that this film is so easily yet thoroughly enjoyable.

Three shorts from Scorsese, Coppola and Woody Allen. Should be good right?

Well two out of three ain't bad.

First off is Martin Scorsese's Life Lessons.

It's about Nick Nolte as an artist who promises a young girl a career as an artist herself if she follows under her wing and she'll learn the the problems of living in the big city, when in fact it's the Nolte with the issues. It's a decent short with a lot of emotion…

  • Midnight in Paris 2011

    Joseph Belanger Joseph Belanger ★★★★

Every time I review a Woody Allen movie, it seems I address the same issues time and time again. This is likely because Allen always chooses to tackle the same themes – class, art and commerce, American values, inferiority and infidelity, to name but a few. Often times, he falls flat, which is entirely reasonable when one takes into account that he makes a movie every year, but once in a while, his recurring neurosis come together so perfectly, they…

    The December Project film #17.

This is a very typical Woody Allen film with a nice ensemble of peculiar and funny characters, and while it is entertaining it doesn't reach the heights of other Woody Allen movies.

As a Spaniard, it's nice to see the settings in Oviedo and Barcelona. Seeing locations you have actually been to in a film is quite cool. Also as a Spaniard, it's good to see Spanish actors Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz in a…
