The Crazies 1973

Watched Apr 13, 2012

The Crazies is a film that really, at no point, seems to know what it is. Is it a 'zombie' / infection film? A siege thriller? An action adventure? Or is trying to be all three?

I think it IS trying to be all three but it fails on all counts for me, and feels as though it's a film with no attention span whatsoever. You don't care about any of the main characters and none of them stand out in the slightest, the ending peters out completely tamely and, above all else, the so-called 'crazies' are not even close to being crazy most of the time. Romero should have called this The Mildly Irritated, that would have been more apt.

The remake cannot help but be an improvement on this. It's just a total mess and was hugely disappointing considering what Romero is capable of.
