The Master 2012 ★★★

In a way I felt like this film was about itself - a great man trying to convince everyone that something, an idea or set of beliefs, is truly great but it not really being so. This film is visually beautiful and the performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are incredible, however I still left the theater feeling as though I didn't "get" something or that I'd missed something crucial. The balance of master and subject between Joaquin and PSH is fascinating and the way in which that relationship balance plays out are the best scenes in the film.
