Silent J’s review:
As of now, I have never seen the original 1957 version, but this is one of the best westerns and one of the best all around films I've ever seen.
Both Russel Crowe and Christian Bale give fantastic Oscar worthy performances (unfortunately both were snubbed). Russel Crowe is outstandingly charismatic as the bad guy you actually might root for. Christian Bale is brilliant and believable as a down-on-his-luck rancher. They have amazing chemistry and the best scenes are when they act off of each other. The supprting cast is just as wonderful. Peter Fonda gives a stellar subtle performance. Logan Lerman gives a nice performance in such a young talent. Ben Foster nearly steals the show. You even get great, but small performances from Gretchen Mol and Alan Tudyk.
The action is virtually non-stop and made even more compelling by such a well executed story. The story is made even better by such stellar performances from such a great cast. The cast is what makes this film. The film is moving and beautiful to look at.
One of the best westerns ever made and a must see for any true western lover.
