Alien 1979 ★★★★★

Reviewed Apr 02, 2012

With the latest continuation of the Alien franchise, Prometheus, vastly approaching, let's take a look at the film that started it all.

To my knowledge, this is the first film that did a genuinely superb job blending sci-fi and horror. This blend was done before, but never in such a masterful way. This proved that you can take a b-movie plot, add some glorious production value and amazing special effects and turn it into a first-rate instant classic. The special effects look creative and amazing and the iconic alien is still the most terrifying monster I've ever seen on screen. The atmosphere itself is chilling. Just the thought that "In space, no one can hear you scream" is terrifying enough. Ridley Scott handles a simple premise and turns it into a scary, creative, innovative, and unforgettable film with a top notch cast that includes a star making performance from Sigourney Weaver as the now iconic Ripley.

Simply put, they don't make them like they used to anymore. This is above and beyond any big budget horror film that is around today.
