Friends with Kids 2012 ★★★★★

Watched Apr 12, 2012

Friends With Kids is the unofficial sequel to Bridesmaids if Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm (sorta) worked out their relationship and got married, Maya Rudolph got divorced and married the cop (who's real name escapes me at the moment), and they were all friends with Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt. The best part is this is actually a lot better than Bridesmaids.

From a writing standpoint, this is a huge improvement from Bridesmaids. That may not be fair to compare given that Kristen Wiig wrote Bridesmaids and Jennifer Westfeldt wrote this film, but this was more clever and better executed. It was certainly refreshing and surprising that there were no gross out gags. With all the gross out gags in Hollywood these days, I almost thought they would go for a shit gag while changing the babies diaper. It's nice to see a comedy that can be naturally funny without the constant need for shit, dick, and fart jokes/gags. A huge highlight was the cast. Everyone was fantastic from Adam Scott to Jennifer Westfeldt to Jon Hamm to Kristen Wiig to Edward Burns, etc. Even Megan Fox worked on some level. She was'nt great, but she was good enough and fit the role. Every character is handled well and each has a fair share of good memorable moments. The drama is just heartwrenching at points and the comedy is really funny at others. Both balance each other out well.

Jennifer Westfeldt creates a wonderful directorial debut that is a funny, smart, heartwrenching, heartfelt, and honest romantic comedy. My favorite film of 2012 thus far. It gives me hope that Hollywood can learn that you don't need excessive gross out gags to make a genuinely funny film.

  • I think Bridesmaids is funnier, but that this was a much better written film.

  • I agree. Bridesmaids is a lot funnier, but the gross out gags (particularly when they all got food poisoning) took me a little out of the film. Friends With Kids is more driven by drama, but is more clever and better written. Aside from the cast, these films could'nt be more different, but I prefer Friends With Kids.
