Silent J’s review:
Rewatched with commentary by the real Henry Hill and former FBI agent Edward McDonald
With the recent death of Henry Hill (may he rest in piece) I figured I should stop procrastinating and listen to the commentary from him and former FBI agent Edward McDonald so I could have a better understanding of the man. Fascinating to learn more about the man behind the character of Henry Hill as well as how accurate the film is to what happened in real life. Hill talks about how well the film captured the real events and people as well as praising the job the actors do, specifically Ray Liotta. He confirms a lot of the stuff in the film like how much "Tommy was a real sick fuck" and "He used to fuck with me a lot... bust my balls." It's kinda surprising to listen to Hill not only talk about the real events with such casualty, but he's so comfortable with what he did and has no regrets. It's almost disturbing how casually he says things like "He was a thick headed son of a bitch, but he finally got the message after we burned his place a few times" and "Oh I remember that time we chopped him up." It makes the film even more interesting and compelling knowing how accurate it is. Makes you appreciate the film even more. You get a real sense that Hill and the former FBI agent have this strong bond. They sound comfortable with each other like friends instead of just a captive with his captor. This is a really interesting commentary that is a true pleasure to listen to. Like the film itself, i loved every minute of it. If you love Goodfellas and you ever get your hands on the dvd, this is a must listen. Makes you look at the film in a whole new light.
