Silent J’s review:
Well, George Clooney was'nt kidding at the Golden Globes when he said Michael Fassbender can play golf behind his back minus the club.......Hell he can take an eye out and put people in the hospital with that little "Fast Bender".
Anyway, this "well-hung" masterpiece stars Michael Fassbender as Brandon, a 30 something sex addict struggling to control his sex addiction.
Michael Fassbender gives one of the best performances I've seen in my life and in my opinion, the best performance of the year. It's, for lack of a better word, a "shame" that the Academy did'nt nominate him for Best Actor. He literally became Brandon and helped you sympathise with the character of Brandon, who you can't help but sympathise with especially when he is prowling around New York like an animal desperate feed his addiction but at the same time trying to control his addiction.
You can tell that Brandon is'nt a bad guy. He just comes from a bad place like his equally messed up sister Sissy played by Carey Mulligan. For years, people have struggled to take Carey Mulligan seriously after she's been typcast as so many doey eyed characters. Any doubt that you had about her talents will be erased once you see this film. She blew my mind and deserved an Oscar nomination of her own. She was also snubbed, but was phenomenal nonetheless.
Director Steve McQueen did a marvelous job creating a world that is so unnerving but mesmerizing especially due the graphic use of sexuality. He leaves a lot unsaid, but that's what makes this film so fascinating. It's hard to watch but you can't look away. The cinematography helps create this cold, hellish reality for Brandon. The editing is amazing.
This film could have easily been about sex addiction but ended up being about the human being, our flaws, our needs, our wants, and what makes us "us". Michael Fassbender makes this an essential viewing.
