Love it or hate it, I really enjoyed this and think it really works. It's cool to see the Transformers and the human story is well done and actually relatable. It has some problems, but who would go into this wanting a masterpiece? It gives you what you want and it does a fine job doing it.
I loved this film and thought it was well done. I watched about have of the 2nd film and turned it off. I have no desire to see the 3rd.
I haven't seen the sequels either, but "Transformers" has always worked for me as well, mainly because it takes itself (mostly) seriously. I appreciate that it plays things straight and doesn't have the cartoon-campy tone of, say, "G.I. Joe."
@Travis I agree and as for G.I. Joe I refuse to watch it because I loved it as a kid, and I can tell by the trailers and reviews I've read that they ruined it.
The first film works somewhat because there's a buildup to the eventual appearance of the Autobots, and until then we get a somewhat interesting mystery. The overall plot is also pretty straightforward. Decepticons try to obtain Allspark, revive Megatron, and take over the world. When the final battle actually happens, we get a nice equal mix of action between the humans and the robots. I may still have some problems with the way Bay directs the action in this film, but at least it's comparatively clearer and more comprehensible than the sequels.
The sequels feature clusterfucks of a plot, terrible action, and by far the worst thing: The Autobots barely clock in any time in their own films, and instead we focus on Shia being a douche.
Transformers 4 should be purely about the autobots..
It really should. It was understandable to show more humans than autobots in the first film because the humans like Sam were basically the audiences perspective. As he was learning everything about the aubtobots so were we. Now after three films it seems pointless and more like Sam Witwicky and Friends featuring Transformers instead of actually being a Transformers movie.
