Fan Theories
Whether you come across a fan's film theory and think it's either complete bullshit or something plausible, they are usually always something interesting to ponder. I compiled this list for you members out there to comment about your own theories, I'll add the film you have a theory on, and credit you in the description (which is in list view of course). I'll start off with the first couple and the rest is up to you.
I've never been a fan of that theory, especially since films like For Your Eyes Only, Diamonds are Forever, and some other things completely destroy it. It's nice on paper though.
I do however LOVE the theory that Ferris Beuller's Day Off is a Fight Club esque tale of Cameron inventing the character of Ferris Bueller and using him as an excuse to go off on adventures and come to his own self actualization.
@Cinebro I realized that after seeing films like Diamonds are Forever killing that theory, but I added it just to kickstart this list. That's why I like the idea of him being a time lord. Sounds stupid, but it's kinda cool and to me it's more plausible than a different man every time.
@Adam Haha I'll credit you both for it.
Also, as much as I've always loved the idea of that theory, it's killed instantly as soon as someone asks "What about Ferris's sister?"
Or Cameron could have invented the whole story revolving around his entire family as some sort of elaborate design. Or Cameron is indeed Ferris.
There's so many ways that theory can work.
Also, there's one for Aladdin that's pretty mindblowing.
^ Holy shit. Mind=Blown. Makes me want to see Aladdin again. Added
Casino Royale (the Peter Sellers version) takes the Bond is multiple people theory and runs with it, having almost every character assume the James Bond codename.
I've also heard a rumor that the first draft of Goldeneye featured Bronson meeting Connery, and confirming that Bond is a false identity.
I have'nt seen the Sellers Casino Royale (I might for my Bondathon) but I'm kinda glad Bronson did'nt meet Connery in Goldeneye. As cool as that would have been and been cool to confirm the codename theory, if you look at all the Bond films and the direct sequels like Diamonds are Forever, it might have come off as convuluted.
The one that's been making the rounds lately is that Tarantino's films all take place in the same universe - from reddit, obvs:
"Because World War 2 ended in a movie theater, everybody lends greater significance to pop culture, hence why seemingly everybody has Abed-level knowledge of movies and TV. Likewise, because America won World War 2 in one concentrated act of hyperviolent slaughter, Americans as a whole are more desensitized to that sort of thing. Hence why Butch is unfazed by killing two people, Mr. White and Mr. Pink take a pragmatic approach to killing in their line of work, Esmerelda the cab driver is obsessed with death, etc.
You can extrapolate this further when you realize that Tarantino's movies are technically two universes - he's gone on record as saying that Kill Bill and From Dusk 'Til Dawn take place in a 'movie movie universe'; that is, they're movies that characters from the Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, and Death Proof universe would go to see in theaters. (Kill Bill, after all, is basically Fox Force Five, right on down to Mia Wallace playing the title role.)"
I've read several theories on the Tarantino-verse and if you run a marathon of all the films he's written, it's amazing how well connected they all are. Even the films he's had little to do with. The character Earl McGraw was not only in From Dusk Til Dawn but Kill Bill, Planet Terror, and Death Proof. People say a lead character in a film he produced called Curdled is the cab driver from Pulp Fiction. In Curdled, she is seen watching a clip from From Dusk Til Dawn. You can go on endlessly about how you can connect the films Tarantino has been affiliated with. It's really a fascinating universe/theory. Added
There's also a really clever Brazilian short on Youtube called Tarantino's Mind that goes into depth on those theories if you have'nt seen it www.youtube.com/watch?v=op4byt-DtsI
It's from Cracked originally. Of course nothing original is on reddit.
Fun fact for Ferris Bueller, Ferris scores highly on the test for phycopathy, especially manipluation, deviancy and lack of remorse. Not a theory but it puts a fun spin on things.
The Tarantino thing isn't so much a theory as it is straight cannon: besides Earl Mcgraw, Vincent Vega and Mr. Yellow are brothers (and I believe they're related to one of the characters in Inglorious Bastards). Out of Sight is part of the same continuity (Michael Keaton plays the same character in it and Jackie Brown).
That being said, I don't believe Tarantino's ever confirmed that the piano player at the start of Kill Bill Vol. 2 is Jules Winnfield, which is a crazy theory I personally subscribe to.
@Cole That Winnfield theory is another really interesting thing to think about.
This probably wouldn't hold up to scrutiny and may have even been disproved by the director's cut (which I haven't seen), but here goes...
"Donnie Darko" - The events of the film, at least most of them, actually take place in Donnie's mind in the seconds between his being impaled/crushed by plane parts and his actual death soon after. The bulk of the film is simply 'his life passing before his eyes' in a synaptic burst right before he shuffles off his mortal coil.
That's an interesting theory. I still need to rewatch the film one day. I always found theories like that interesting. Kinda reminds me of this theory I read a while ago on Taxi Driver that the ending is all in Travis's head. Everything that happens in the end was how he expected it all to turn out, which explains why the ending ends on such a high note. What really happens is he's killed while trying to save her.
