Le Samouraï 1967 ★★★★½

Watched May 13, 2012

"Nothing to say?" "Not with a gun on me." "Is that a principle?" "A habit."

It's hard to judge these older gems since I'm so used to movies that were built on movies like these and have gone much further in terms of depth and complexity. However, all modern dramas and thrillers aside, Le Samourai was really a nice movie that had a calm, dangerous and classy feeling all going at once. It felt slow paced, but still perfectly paced. The classy soundtrack complimented the scenes remarkably. If I want a laid back, yet exciting movie while enjoying a cup of tea with a fancy for finer music, I'm watching Le samourai.

  • Had a similar first time experience with this film. Couldn't agree more with you!

  • I was taken aback by how simple and...dare I say...ordinary this film was. It certainly wasn't bad, but definitely a far cry from the modern day level of entertainment you see in newer, similar films.

  • The thing I adored about this film was Le Samourai. I loved watching him. I loved the silent focus on his routine. I loved the look and feel. The plot? meh. But the look? Can't be beat.

  • Exactly, Lise. Plot was pretty meh to today's standards easily, but how many of these silent killer revenge plots did we have in 1967? (I'm no expert at that) I thought it was pretty interesting how 1/3 of the movie was all in the police station doing the process of elimination. Movies these days just fly right through police processing and even if they tried to lengthen it, they'd probably fail.

  • This film is one of the best examples of the fact that what you tell isn't always as important as how you tell it.
