  • DMT: The Spirit Molecule 2010

    ★★★★ Watched 29 Mar, 2013

Really good, but it didn't include the parts from the book where people get raped by crocodiles, repeatedly visit space stations with insectoid aliens, see dragons and the origin of mankind on this planet. Basically all the stuff that supports David Icke's reptilian agenda theory.

  • Eden of the East: Air Communication 2009

    ★★½ Watched 17 Feb, 2013

Not to be watched instead of the series as it has a running commentary that spoils stuff, it's only a recap in preparation for the films if you can't remember the series properly.

  • Berberian Sound Studio 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 04 Jan, 2013

If your idea of horror is gore and jump scares, you will be very disappointed with this film. It's psychological, surreal, and plays with diegesis. Obviously you'll get more out of it if you're a fan of gialli, although that's not essential. If you liked Inland Empire, you'll probably like this as they share thematic and stylistic elements.

  • Child's Play 1988

    ★★½ Watched 21 Nov, 2012

The film plays like a mystery despite the fact everything was stupidly revealed in the opening scene - bad move.

  • The Exorcist 1973

    ★★ Rewatched 16 Sep, 2012

The opening in the Middle East is pretty good, but the possession and the exorcism are really silly. Even when I was younger it didn't particularly affect me, nowhere near as much as 'Halloween' did for instance. Also I'm not sure how a girl would survive having her head spun around 360 degrees, but anyway...

  • The 6th Day 2000

    Rewatched 28 Aug, 2012

So dreadful I couldn't stop laughing, it's not too dissimilar to 'The Room'.

  • Noroi 2005

    ★★★★ Added

Fans of Noroi, be sure to check out letterboxd.com/film/occult/ by the same director, it's the same mockumentary style and almost as good.

  • Occult 2009

    ★★★½ Rewatched 03 Jul, 2012

Not quite as satisfying as 'Noroi', but Shiraishi again shows his talent for the 'mockumentary' with convincing dialogue and performances, and intriguing plot. Fellow J-horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa makes an appearance (as with Takashi Shimizu's 'Reincarnation'), there's some experimental industrial music that effectively adds to the creepiness, and the ending is rather cool.

  • Door 3 1996

    ★★★½ Added

An atmospheric precursor to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's subsequent output (one scene is practically reused in Kairo), a fun little J-horror gem.

  • Joyû-rei 1996

    ★★★½ Added

A creepy little precursor to Nakata's J-horror masterpiece 'Ringu', it's just a shame it's so short.
