A Single Man 2009 ★★★½

Watched May 24, 2012

An visually stunning film that makes me envious of nearly every material possession George owns. The story ended up being a lot simpler than I was expecting (made somewhat more melodramatic by the score) but this was a very solid effort by first-time director Tom Ford, and I'll look forward to seeing what he does next.

Edit: After sleeping on it I realised there were three things I had neglected to mention:

1) The use of colour in this film is fantastic. It ebbs and flows with the emotion of the film, fluctuating in saturation; enough to notice but not so overt as to be a distraction.

2) I think this is probably the best performance from Colin Firth that I've seen, which deserves mention (though I also quite enjoyed Julianne Moore with a British accent)

3) I really wish I'd seen this on the big screen
