With The Avengers set for release next year, my completist tendencies are a little more satiated after having seen this. But another Iron Man, this is not.
It's a hard task to create another world and make it believable, but the CGI in this film is so overdone that it's hard for any of it to be convincing. I think Lawrence said it well:
When I want to see Norse gods on the big screen, I'd like to see them looking suitably Norse, and not like screen-caps from a computer game.
But the weakest part of the whole film is the redemption of Thor himself. Banished to earth, he needs to learn a lesson or two about life... but what does he learn? His breaking point comes because he can't pick up a hammer, and suddenly he sees the error of his ways. Outside of his banishment there are no other trials or tribulations, no real lessons learned, no obstacles overcome... where is the character development arc here? He still has the strength of ten men, even though his powers have been revoked. He's still a buff (REALLY BUFF), good looking guy. Natalie Portman has the hots for him. Yeah, that would make me rethink my life too.
All in all, a pretty average film in the genre.
"I'm Thor," he cried, and his horse replied, "you forgot your thaddle, thilly!"
Also, the Earth sets/locations felt small, looked cheap. Seems like Branagh was the perfect choice for this. Apparently, not.
