X-Men: First Class 2011
Like any of these X-Men movies, there's way too many characters in this, but X-Men: First Class is still kind of fun. The 60s backdrop is a refreshing addition to the tired "superhero origins" story, even if it feels a little underused. Indeed, director Matthew Vaughn seems a kind of hesitant about a number of things in this flick, but he's packed it with so many characters and set-pieces that it hardly becomes an issue. Personally I enjoyed the campness…

Beautiful Lies 2010
A mother, daughter, college-educated-bachelor love triangle? This could have gone horribly wrong, especially as a Hollywood production.
Audrey Tatou gives another excellent performance, as a self-confident salon owner who wants nothing more than her mother's happiness. Trying to cheer her abandoned and unhappy mother, she unwittingly creates a bizarre tangle of affection and confusion.
Highlights include Émilie's mother, Maddy, sneaking through the town barefoot in her nightgown. A night with a bottle of Smirnoff and a paperclip. Some exquisite facial…

Children of Men 2006
This movie changed my world. Well, at least until that typical 4 hour post-coital movie buzz wore off. But for those 4 hours, maaaan, I was tripping. That one continuous shot in the car is one of the most spectacular camera moves I've ever seen. Also, I can't get enough of Clive Owen, he's just so gritty and uncouth, just the way I like my leading men.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986
It's my belief that almost every significant life lesson can be learned by watching Ferris Bueller. Sometimes you just need a musical number.

The Notebook 2004
I started this movie and 5 minutes in I wanted to punch something, probably my face. I loathe romantic movies. In fact, I can only stomach them if the lead love interest gets eaten by a zombie. It's this sort of tosh that brainwashes women into being utter saps for all the wrong reasons. There is nothing sexy about suffering for a generation just for one snog in the rain...

The American President 1995
The American President is so charming, witty, and smart, it feels like an insult to call it a romantic-comedy despite that being the most apt description. It is filled with Sorkanisms and Sorkinisms—ferociously idealistic acerbic coworkers walk and talk and banter and argue. Much of the dialogue was eventually carried over to Studio 60 and (along with the sets) The West Wing. The humor really punches in the awkward personal moments that arise when dating the "most powerful man in the world" (and if that title is indicative of one’s sexual prowess). This film has always been one of my favorites.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004
it's a bit cliche to love this movie, but who doesn't? Kate is dazzling, Jim is adorable, Kirsten is a floozy, Mark is a giant dork, and Elijah is creepy to a tee. Gondry is a genius.

Brokeback Mountain 2005
Watched this with my girlfriend and started sobbing uncontrollably at the end there. So embarrassing. Such a well crafted film, if the characters were perhaps a little frustrating at times.

The Hurt Locker 2009
Without trying to be cool, I saw this film way before it was trendy. Before the six Oscars, and before talk of suing downloaders.
You see my Aunty sent me a copy a few months before the Oscars. I was home alone (we don't "do" war films in the house otherwise), and had absolutely no idea what to expect. My entire pre-reading was limited to one or two tweets about Hurt Locker being good.
Wow.
My main impression was the…

Defined a generation. The basketcase, the nerd, the jock, the rebel and the princess.

Dazed and Confused 1993
Have you seen this? Be a lot cooler if you did. Everyone remembers the last day of school and waiting in line for beer and concert tickets.
For all you youngsters, yes this happened.
