Shame 2011 ★★

Well this turned out to be EXACTLY the movie you think it's going to be. From the minute you read the synopsis of a well to do, good looking sex addict in NY and his unstable sister coming to visit, you know what the movie is going for, especially the last half hour where everything falls apart and he self destructs by wallowing in his addiction. The moment the movie introduces a scenario, you see what's next. Main Character and his sleazy hound dog boss/rival go to see Main Character's pretty but unstable sister sing at nightclub, what will happen? The lack of any real stakes, the cliched predictable nature of narrative and the overwrought take on material sank the movie for me.

Still, there is much to like about the film. The lead is great and the director has serious style to burn with sleek modern locations, great fashion and technical, tricky long takes. The middle section has the best scene where Main Character Brandon goes on a date with a co-worker. It's a knockout, uncut shot that perfectly captures first date jitters with an interrupting waiter.

I really wanted to like this. For awhile it seemed like it was going somewhere and had my attention but as I said, it held no surprises. I guess my brother put it best: handsome, successful New Yorker sleeping with beautiful women. I guess you could call it a tragic sex addiction but I would say that most people would call that living the dream.
