Reviews of this have been a bit "meh" so I wasn't expecting much. You can imagine my surprise then, when it turned out to be really rather good. On the whole you can expect to be in safe hands when Denzel is in the lead role, and this is no exception.
Yes Espinosa's direction is a little frenetic at times but it is a fast paced exciting thriller so it's appropriate at certain points.
It's so easy to loose interest in an action movie if it's all pace and no plot. Thankfully even though the narrative to Safe House is fairly lightweight, it has just enough complexity to keep you interested.
Ryan Reynold's is shaping up as a pretty decent actor and is convincing as the rookie CIA agent caught in the middle of a dangerous situation, combining innocence and physical ability to create a more believable action hero.
Really not bad at all, don't believe the "meh" reviews.
