    Jupiter Ascending 2015

    ★★ Watched 12 Jul, 2015

Jupiter Jones is the coolest character in recent cinema. She's like Humphrey Bogart and Lauran Bacall levels of cool. The stuff she goes through in the first half an hour of this movie would leave lesser mortals shaking in a padded cell, wide eyed in wonderous disbelief or, at the very least, saying "whoa" from time to time. But no, Jupiter takes all this in her stride without batting an eyelid, she feels like the damsel in distress from 80s…

What if Ringu was made by John would probably have been fucking awesome, right? Still, this comes close to that cos the vibe is creepy, the plot is pretty much the same (sex instead of video) and the soundtrack is damn killer!

I remember watching a TV documentary called The Secret Life Of The Crash Test Dummy one evening many years ago while getting very high. I realised that future robots would be created from the technology that came out of these violent collisions and that one day they would look back at their origins. It really gave me the fear.

Ex Machina brought that back, that dark SF feeling. Like all the space pollution orbiting the Earth is creating a cage…

I don't really know that much about Mark Ruffalo, but he seems a decent enough guy. So I took a chance on this and boy did he steer me wrong. Two hours of bland, vacant, passionless, twee music and the cuntyest cast of actors practically begging you to put your fist through the screen and repeatedly punch them in the face. At one point I wanted to put my arm around Mark, have a quiet word in his ear about…

There is something wonderful about the insane moments being physically created, bit like the acid bridge scene from Apocalypse now. I fully welcome the return to this sort of filmmaking even though the final product didn't achieve the masterpiece status others are proclaiming it to be. I loved so much about it, especially the ruling family of characters and the strong female lead, but it didn't feel like a Matrix or The Raid kind of leap for the action genre...more a nostalgic love letter on some very fancy paper.

You know that bit at the end of Swingers where he's on the phone and just looks happy as fuck? That' was me through this whole movie.

Started off really well, Spider-Man is great in this one...shame about the villain/s. Oh well, on to the next re-boot...
