  • Birdman 2014

    ★★★★ Watched 19 Jan, 2015

Direction and acting are both handled wonderfully, smudging the divide between theatre and cinema, mocking both worlds while celebrating their power. Birdman won me over pretty quickly and I was ready for something amazing to happen. Like, Fight Club or Brazil amazing, which admittedly is asking a hell of a lot, but it felt like it was coming, that this film could blow my mind. That utimately it didn't left me feeling a little unsatisfied, but I get that's more my failing than the film's. I certainly won't begrudge it getting all the awards this year.

  • Paddington 2014

    ★★★ Watched 02 Jan, 2015

Great when being charming and sentimental, naff when wheeling out tired film references like Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible. Still, a nice surprise and a good start to 2015 cinema trips!

I'm amazed Jared Leto managed to direct this with his head stuck so far up his own arse.

I liked this a lot. But as much as I liked it, even loved it when that Pearl Jam track kicked in, I couldn't get True Detective out of my head while watching it. Kept waiting for Matthew McConaughey to show up and tell Christian Bale that "You, yourself, this whole big drama, it was never more than a jerry rig of presumption and dumb will, and you could just let go. To finally know that you didn't have to…

As adverts for skateboard championships go this wasn't as bad as it could have been due to the competitors each being interesting enough, but could have done with more skating...that would have been sick! Had more product placement than a Michael Bay movie, but I guess it made sense here...fancy a Mountain Dew now though, that's a drink, right? Sick!

  • Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 30 Oct, 2014

"A pimp is the loneliest bastard on Earth. He's gotta know his whores. He can't let them know him. He's gotta be God all the way."

Robert Beck's writing made a big impact on me when I was growing up. His books did then what The Wire has recently been doing to people's heads. Giving them an experience both fascinating and horrifying, yet completely compelling - told by somebody who has absolutely lived that life...for real. Beck was a pimp…

  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 2013

    ★★★ Watched 30 Oct, 2014

Last time she hid up a tree, but this time they've whipped her boyf and beaten up her fashion designer. Shit is about to get real.

And all joking aside, as much as I want to mention the granny riding around on Aquaman's back like Yoda, shit does get pretty real at the end there and finally I think I've been won over by this series. Just don't tell anybody, ok?

  • We Are the Best! 2013

Three girls brought together through their hatred of the high jump team and love of alternative hairstyles. Like Stand By Me if Stand By Me wasn't a load of bollocks!

  • Gone Girl 2014

Fincher has secured his place as a true master director here, skilfully manipulating his audience at the level of Hitchcock. Brilliantly cast, wonderfully shot and utterly compelling storytelling from start to finish.
