List by Steve Tothill
Speaking as a child of the Eighties
I rented Summer School from my local video shop so many times they eventually gave it to me...80s films that you wore the tape out of and kept you company during sneaky sick days from school or just encapsulate that American fantasy world only seen in the movies.
wheres weekend at bernies !!!
Was toying with including it, is it the first or the second one where they staple his wig on? Either way, you've pushed me over the edge.
It was the first one :)
Cocoon, mayhap?
I think if you open the door to Cocoon then you let Steve Guttenberg in, next thing you know we have Three Men and a Baby in here. That said, Police Academy is already on the list so perhaps the damage has been done?
Guttenburg, last spotted doing panto in Bromley !!
Mannequin! Cloak & Dagger! The Goonies! Young Guns! Heathers!
Speaking as an also-child of the 80s, I could do this all day :)
Weird rules to this list, but I've avoided films that are set outside the 80s - which would rule out Young Guns. Mannequin! and Heathers are great calls. I've also avoided huge movies like ET and Goonies, is this wrong? Probably.
Fair enough about Young Guns. In which case, please accept my one/two Christian Slater double feature of Gleaming The Cube and Pump Up The Volume as a substitute :)
I understand the rationale behind avoiding the bigger ticket releases to focus on the less well-remembered ones, but if Explorers is on here, then Goonies ought to be as well. That was a pretty common Saturday when I was seven or eight, Goonies into Explorers into Back To The Future.
Oh, how about Men At Work as an Estevez substitute? Love that movie still.
Sorry, one more. Gotcha! with Anthony Edwards. I liked that movie so much that I wrote a novelization of it when I was seven or eight. I don't think I finished, but I did about the first 45 minutes and the ending. Awesome 80s trash :)
Looks like you are trying to sneak some 90s films onto the list! ;)
Oh no! What's 90s? Pump Up The Volume? Surely not Gleaming The Cube...I'm afraid that in my mind the 80s extends from my birth until Nevermind came out :)
Well, I don't feel Cocoon owing anything to Guttenberg, but it has Don Ameche and Hume Cronyn in addition to Brian Dennehy. A lovely film.
Speaking of Dennehy another one pops to mind, the excellent F/X.
Still not sold on Cocoon, but oh my word - F/X, you just gave me an insane flashback (which is what this list is all about). Going to have to rewatch that soon. "Remember my particular genius"!
The only ones I see missing are "The Neverending Story" "Batman" and "Ghostbusters"
I think I'm going to just bite the bullet and put up some of the BIG movies I've been holding back on...
how about the classic Real Genius, I love that one
oo ooo ooo, i forgot about the original footloose and summer rental is another one too
REAL GENIUS... lovely. Stevie, going by the movies you've included you might also wanna check out:
FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH

MAKING THE GRADE
THE MONSTER SQUAD
BETTER OFF DEAD
THE LAST STARFIGHTER
THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN
VALLEY GIRL
...all good '80s cheese!
Sorry, see you've already included LAST STARFIGHTER and MONSTER SQUAD. Must've gone boss-eyed.
