Sean Kelly’s review:
Seventh film of my October HorrorFest.
Grave Encounters is a found footage film that satirizes "Ghost Hunting" reality shows. You have the douchy host, the "psychic medium" who's really an actor, the punky girl, the nerdy tech guy, and the black cameraman.
The entire first half of movie is just the crew going through the motions of recording their show in an abandoned asylum and the bulk of the ghostly events don't happen until the second half when the group finds themselves literally trapped.
To be frank, I didn't find the film all that scary. Like many found footage films, a whole lot of nothing happens for the bulk of the running time. It isn't really until the final half hour when the apparitions seen all over the trailers and posters start showing up and even then they are sparce. Might have been scarier if I saw it in a theatre.
Overall, it's not a bad found footage film, it's just not one I'd rush to rewatch.
