The Tree of Life 2011 ★★★★

Reviewed May 14, 2012

The most cinematically beautiful film I've seen in awhile. This is more a piece of art than anything else.

  • This is my favorite film of 2011 and one of my favorites of all time.

  • I really need to give this a rewatch one of these days. Beautiful art, but I need a rewatch in order to delve deeper into what it all means; the symbolism of it all.

  • This film actually mad me angry! I thought it was a classic case of a director putting art over substance. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't do it. A lot of people really like it, but it just wasn't for me I guess.

  • I loved that long sequence of seemingly random images. A lot of people in the theater walked out at that point in the movie. This is certainly not a movie one could watch over and over again but it's definitely worth seeing. I can understand your point but Terrance Malick wasn't putting art over substance. The "art" is the substance and helps to create the film's premise. How insignificant is the underlying storyline of Brad Pitt and his family in the grand spectrum of the universe? I felt extremely irrelevant after seeing this movie which is exactly what Malick was trying to achieve.

  • The best film of 2011 and an instant all-time favorite.
