One of those Sophie's choices -- if you prefer books to movies, read the book first; if vice versa, see the movie first. Both sort of demand that they be your first exposure to the story and characters. Having read the book (basically Jane Austen's DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?), the movie's a slight letdown.
