I guess I watched this a little late for Christmas, but there's never a bad time to rewatch this slice of genre-mash-up magic. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a comedy, an action-adventure, a murder mystery, and a romance. It's also an excessive amount of fun that never gets old no matter how many times you rewatch it. When I say "you," I mean the awesome people who've seen/love this. If you don't fall into those categories, I feel sorry for you. Good times await you on this harrowing and hilarious journey.
Our protagonist (and excellent, if a little too self-deprecating narrator) Harry finds himself embroiled in a murder mystery after his job as a petty thief lands him an acting gig. Together with the real-life detective named "Gay Perry" (Val Kilmer) hired to train him for his upcoming film role, they must solve the mystery before they're both wrongly accused of murder. Somehow his old childhood flame Harmony (Michelle Monaghan) gets involved in the story to add a little romance and at one point she dons (and kicks ass in) a fetching super-short lady Santa Claus outfit.
Admittedly the plot is a little convoluted and a lot less is happening than it seems. How many shits do you think I give? ZERO. The real point of the film is to entertain with its witty dialogue and hilarious dark humor. No one is better suited to this type of witty banter than Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer. They both have this laid back kind of charm and can both make you believe they are the most intelligent in the room. It was a stroke of genius casting these two, though I'm disappointed Val Kilmer hasn't gotten more roles like this. Underneath all the silliness, the wit, the bloodshed, and the absurdity, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is simply a touching bromance. I'm only half joking about that.
