Battle Royale 2001
SILLY!
The way everyone raved about this being the inspiration for, or better than, the Hunger Games, I was convinced it was going to be something stellar.
It's not.
Lots of gore. No character development at all. No way to understand why some characters turn into sadists, and others don't. NO explanation for why these kids are so bad at shooting each other in the head. Nonsensical.

Into the Wild 2007
I think I was spoilt by having read the piece on which this was based. I also couldn't really connect to Chris' reasons for abandoning his family and the world. Beautiful, well-constructed, but ultimately depressing rather than moving.

This film is so unlike anything I've seen Hollywood churn out recently that I was genuinely staggered. You have to concentrate. Hard. For the entire film.
