Triple-threat Lynn Shelton writes, acts and directs in this offbeat bromance about a couple of former college buddies who agree to make a porno art video together. Teaming up effectively as the two straight guys planning to get it on are mumblecore regular Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair) and veteran actor Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project). Alycia Delmore is excellent, too, as the loving wife who wants to start a family and gets blindsided by the boys' project idea. Will they really go through with it? And why? To prove what point?
Pretty much everyone knows these characters: the fellow who settles down to a "picket fence" life and his friend who travels off to experience the world. Bringing them together like this allows the film to explore themes of closeness, love, friendship, trust and openness while maintaining a constant level of playfulness and humor throughout. For those unfamiliar with mumblecore, this could be a good introduction. It's authentic, irreverent, thought-provoking and, above all, fun.
