  • Total Recall 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 21 Apr, 2013

I liked the changes in the story - it felt more like a retelling of the same theme than a remake of the movie (which would still have had mutants and Mars in it).

Interestingly, though the general plot was the same, there doesn't seem to have been as much exposition in this movie. There were some subtle character points made that could easily have been lost if you tuned out for 30 seconds, but were major points in the…

  • Treasure Planet 2002

    ★★½ Watched 01 Apr, 2013

I saw this film because it came on while my 4yo daughter was watching Disney Jr.

Now, I have no idea why it was on that channel. Quite frankly, it seemed to be aimed at an older age than the usual programming they have, and I don't think it was at all suitable for a 4yo.

    Not a bad movie though.

  • Wreck-It Ralph 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 03 Apr, 2013

The first 3D film I saw on my brand new 3D TV.

I liked the movie. The cross-overs between the old 8-bit games and modern 3D games was handled really well, and it was nice to see nods to some of the games I remember from my childhood (Q*bert!).

It's obvious this movie was never intended to be a 3D feature. The 3D component looks really good, and is handled well, with absolutely no instances of "3D for the sake of 3D", which even Avatar was guilty of in at least one instance.

  • The Vow 2012

    ★★ Watched 24 Feb, 2013

Not really much of a story, which isn't too surprising when you find out it's based on interesting, but not exciting, true events.

  • The Hunger Games 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 09 Feb, 2013

Feels kind of like a YA oriented version of The Running Man - without the fancy electric suit.

  • Stan Helsing 2009

    ½ Watched 07 Feb, 2013

I only watched this because I needed to stay awake, but was too tired to do anything productive.

Billed as a comedy, this film isn't funny. It isn't anything really - it's just boring. I'm surprised I succeeded in staying awake.

  • Larry Crowne 2011

    ★★ Watched 30 Jan, 2013

Old guy goes to uni, doesn't show much interest in his really grump lecturer. Then he leaves uni and they get together. Not much story or character development.

  • The Descendants 2011

    ★★★ Watched 05 Jan, 2013

    Reasonably predictable. Good acting.

  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 22 Oct, 2012

This film was pretty much exactly what I expected, and as such, I really enjoyed it.

There was enough humour to suggest that they weren't taking themselves too seriously, yet it fit around the conflict well, rather than taking you out of the moment.

With a couple of odd exceptions, the CGI was really well done, and fit into the live action seamlessly.

It's definitely a movie I will watch again.

  • Men in Black 3 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 14 Oct, 2012

A good extension to the original movies, I found this film to be on par with the second. I liked the difference in technology portrayed between the "current" and 60's sections of the film, both inside of MIB and out.

Josh Brolin did a fantastic job playing a younger Kay, and it's hard to believe Tommy Lee Jones wasn't doing a voice over in some parts of the film. Jermaine Clement was surprisingly recognisable under his layers of prosthetic makeup,…

  • Cowboys & Aliens 2011

    ★★★ Watched 02 Sep, 2012

About 10 minutes into this film, my wife (who hadn't been paying much attention) asked what it was about, roughly. My reply was "Independence Day set in cowboy times".

Having completed the movie, I stand by that description.

Worth a watch, but I don't feel a need to watch it again.
