Frances Ha 2013
So energetic yet still a downer.

Star Trek Into Darkness 2013
It feels good to watch these characters on the big screen again. Aside from the fucking lens flares, the final moment between Kirk and Spock is very touching. Definitely more action-oriented than the first one, but still very satisfying.

Night Across the Street 2013
Partly funny (in a dark way), partly strange (in a surreal way).

Kill Your Darlings 2013
Was excited to see this after reading all those Twit-reviews from Sundance, especially about Dane DeHaan. While DeHaan himself was very good, the film was not so much. It’s a mix between Ginsberg’s complicated relationship with Lucien Carr and a murder story. The screenplay had some very cheesy scenes (visiting the mother and asking for advice) and lines. The acting was great and I didn’t recognize it was Ben Foster all along. But it had some pretty great scenes like…

Les Misérables 2012
I must make a note that the day I went to see this in NYC, I was having a very bad day. I went to see this at midnight, was very tired, before getting on bus getting back home. The theater was very crowded and I gotta admit the only reason I dragged my ass to see this at midnight was to see Anne Hathaway's Oscar buzzed performance. Mind you that I've listened to her rendition of "I Dreamed a…

Flight 2012
Robert Zemeckis hasn’t made a live-action film in a decade since Tom Hanks starrer, Cast Away. For that movie, Hanks got his fifth Oscar nomination and if everything goes well Denzel Washington‘s portrayal as an alcoholic pilot who saves many passengers during a plane crash will also earn him his sixth nomination. Unfortunately as good as his performance is, this film still cannot be saved for its unbalanced screenplay.
In Flight, Wahington takes a role that is really a fresh…

Anna Karenina 2012
I think it’s pretty much known as general consensus of Joe Wright‘s latest classic adaptation Anna Karenina as a film with “style over substance.” It is beautiful to look at from the costumes to the production design and the single stage set concept will take your breath away. I mean the film is a strong contenders at the technical categories at this year’s Oscar. But count me in as one of the few people who think that this film is…

Anna Karenina 2012
Absolutely tragic, romantic, and sad. Every technical aspect was superb. The actors were incredible.

Happiness 1965
François and Thérése are happily married and blessed with two kids. He’s a carpenter and she’s a dressmaker. When they have free time, they take the kids to picnic. They would have lunch and take a nap there. Their family and colleague are nice to them offering help when they need them. With all these going on, everything in their life seems so perfectly tailored and nothing could go wrong. Unless they want to.
In Le Bonheur, Agnés Varda takes…

Lincoln 2012
By now you’ve probably heard that Lincoln is one the strong frontrunners at the Best Picture Oscar race and Daniel Day-Lewis is getting a ton of acclaim and is predicted to win his third Best Actor Oscar. With that kind of attention and hypes, going into Lincoln I had a high expectation. The film is set after President Abraham Lincoln’s second election and during the Civil War. When Steven Spielberg goes into his period war drama mood, one can only…

Killing Them Softly 2012
I actually can’t believe that this film received “F” grade from CinemaScore, which is the only explanation why a film starring Brad Pitt bombed at the box office. Is it the violence? Is it the political and capitalism themes? Or is it the unconventional ending? Because those are actually what make this film so engrossing and thematically rich. In Andrew Dominik‘s latest effort, a professional hitman named Jackie Cogan is hired to restore order after three guys rob a Mob…
