Above all, I think a good action film should be fun. I didn't find this really fun at all.
I think the main problem is Jean Reno as Leon. He's a very uninteresting protagonist. He has this low, monotonous voice that is seemingly a pre-requisite for most thrillers of this type, and his accent sounds dodgy. It might even be his real accent, I'm not sure, but it sounded dodgy anyway.
Gary Oldman gives the film some life as the villain of the piece; he seems to be good in just about every film he's in.
The direction was decent and cinematography was nice I suppose. It does have all the Luc Besson-isms though. I was actually surprised at how generic this film is. Maybe I'm seeing it through 2012 eyes rather than 1994 eyes, but alas.
