Prometheus 2012

★★½

A little too on the nose with all of its themes. The best sci-fi, a genre known for mining current political affairs as well as religious mythology, does a great job of using those elements as the basis of the story and adding that texture throughout the film WITHOUT drawing too much attention to it. However, in this film we have characters openly talking about the themes to the point where it's laughable. The screenwriters' hands are visible here.

Upstream Color 2013

★★★½

A tone poem on interconnectedness and identity. Malick meets Murakami.

Films that could be categorized as "tone poems" (or, as I like to call them, long-form music videos).

Characterized by elliptical editing, sound as a cohesive glue, and subjective camera work.
