Something occurred to me while watching this again. Just after the scene in which Nicholson's gang has filled out their personal papers, Di Caprio decides not to stay even though he has been told specifically to do so. He is close to being outed and offed and therefore decides "fuck it", he's gonna go for it with Vera Farmiga. I don't know if that's what it means but it added some emotional depth to the film that I hadn't found earlier.
Love the film more and more each time I watch it.

Exactly how I feel about this film.
There are so many awesome lines and moments that I'm just sitting there waiting for. Also, I don't understand why people don't like Nicholson in this. He's awesome!
One of Scorsese's best. The thing that stood out for me was the cleverness of the director. Before any death, and in other important times, in the film he included an 'X' within the shot. Definitely something to look out for. Such a brilliantly made film.
That was an homage to the original Scarface which did the exact same thing.
I didn't know that! Great work.
Also a great watch if you've never seen it. If you like films from the 30s that is... I don't know if there is any other connection to Scarface to warrant the homage in the film though.
Interesting. I didn't catch that this time around. A good excuse to rewatch it again soon!
I LOVE The Departed, I can watch it over and over. It's funny, I hadn't picked up on that chain of events (SSN scene -> Vera), but it totally makes sense, to the point that I feel dim for not picking up on it before!
Stars of the show Baldwin and Wahlberg.
@Julie - it really jumped out at me this time, but I hadn't noticed it before either.
