  • Django Unchained 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 27 Dec, 2012

Django Unchained is typical Tarantino, filled with creative and witty dialogue, several memorable characters, and plenty of blood that comes off as comical the majority of the time. Jamie Foxx is very good as Django but, due mainly to their characters, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio carry the film. Casting those two was brilliant.

The film is a little long but it's barely noticeable because it's fun to watch... once you get over the constant use of the "n" word…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 21 Jul, 2012

First off, Rises is NOT as good as Dark Knight. And it's not really that close. Superhero films tend to rise and fall with the impact provided by their villain(s) and Heath Ledger's Joker was one of the best villains in cinematic history. Bane, while intimidating and a force to be reckoned with, shows no personality or character because of the mask that he wears. Ledger's Joker was loaded with those qualities. Bane's voice, while creepy at first, got old…

  • Skyfall 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 09 Nov, 2012

Bond is back! After the stinker that is Quantum of Solace it's nice to see Bond back on the cinematic level that it reached with Casino Royale. It's got everything you'd want in a Bond movie - except maybe too little screen time for the Bond girls!

  • Looper 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 10 Nov, 2012

A cool story that's very well-written. I can't really say anything bad about the film because it's so original. Time-travel is overplayed, sure, but Johnson takes that concept and presents it in a new way and really makes it work.

  • Argo 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 28 Jan, 2013

Not as suspenseful the second time around (obviously) but the writing stood out more and the direction proved to be incredibly well-done. I have no idea how Affleck didn't get recognized for his direction by the Academy.

  • Argo 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 14 Oct, 2012

Ben Affleck has done it again. Great direction and an excellent weaving of authentic broadcasts with everything going on at CIA headquarters, Hollywood, and multiple locations in Tehran. A top-notch thriller that doesn't have to rely on shoot-outs and explosions. One of this year's best.

  • Silver Linings Playbook 2012

    ★★★★ Rewatched 18 Dec, 2012

On second viewing, the performances from Lawrence and Cooper are still standout but De Niro and Weaver's performances stand out more than they did on first viewing.

The story is great, and certainly Oscar nom worthy but I found that some of the dialogue is just really weird and off at times. I noticed it the first time I saw the film but didn't think much of it but it really stood out upon second viewing. Maybe it's because the…

  • Silver Linings Playbook 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 09 Nov, 2012

Linings is an aloof and heart-warming film with powerful performances from its two leads. Cooper does a really good job as the bi-polar Pat but it's Lawrence, as the "former whore" Tiffany, who steals the film. When she's on the screen, it's hard to pay attention to anything else. An Oscar nomination for Best Actress is guaranteed and she could very well win it.

Also, it's nice to see De Niro back to giving a good performance, one of his…

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 09 Jan, 2013

Not as good as any of the 3 LotR films, it's still enjoyable once you get over its 170 minute length. The special effects and makeup are top-notch, and the riddles scene with Gollum is one of the better scenes in the Jackson/Tolkien films.

Another typical Wes Anderson film, full of color and quirkiness. Each of Anderson's characters brings something to the film, from Bill Murray's tree-chopping father role all the way down to each of the 9 khaki scouts that didn't quit and run away. The two main characters, Sam and Suzy are enjoyable throughout and have different nuances and a certain naivete about them that are simply delightful. For the most part there's a dry sense of humor throughout the film that…
