Interesting, though morbidly bleak concept that fails to live up to its potential, or to director Giorgos Lanthimos's earlier headfuck gem 'Dogtooth'. It follows a group of people who set up a new venture to impersonate the recently deceased. Typically those who died sudden deaths In order to make life more bearable for those they'd left behind. And give friends & families chance to resolve unfinished issues, by way of playing out scenarios.
I'll be honest it was a pretty tough endurance test for me, to say the film was hard viewing would be an understatement. That said its was refreshingly unique (something I'd always vote a movie up for), but I'd have really liked it to have had a little more humor. I don't know say the same basic concept in Todd Solandz or Charlie Kaufmans hands for instance. Anyhow I'm not going to say I loved it (or hated it for that matter) because I didn't, but its worth seeing If for nothing else filmmaker Giorgos Lanthimos proves that theres still original ideas to be had in modern film. And that hes still a guy to keep your beady eyes on.
[PRFR: Personal Reasons For Remembering]
The segments that captivated me most were the moments the actors learnt their lines and tried different personalities until the deceased family members or friends thought them believable enough to accept, and when occasionally the actors broke character.
