Gary Tighe’s review published on Letterboxd:
I saw the trailer for this film and I wasn't sold to be honest, I didn't think I would get too invested in the story of an aspiring drummer...
How wrong was I, what a fantastically made film, utterly intense and thrilling from start to finish. Teller and Simmons give such scintillating performances that I was altogether captivated by them both. As an aspiring actor/singer myself I related to that feeling of needing to master or perfect your craft at all costs. I loved how the dynamics of a mentor and student relationship were explored throughout the film with the many shifts in power between the two, a standout line for me was Simmons saying "I push people beyond what's expected of them," somewhat attempting to justify his quite brutal treatment of his students. It's true that we need to push ourselves in order to create something new or achieve something wonderful but the beauty of this film was how it pondered the affect it can have on you as a person and what a selfish and lonely road that journey to greatness can be.
Overall just a beautifully directed film with top performances and quality music throughout... already excited about a re-watch!
