Holy Motors 2012 ★★★★★

Watched Aug 14, 2012

With Holy Motors Leos Carax has created a piece of pure cinema and a theatrical experience like no other in recent memory. Denis Lavant's performance(s) range from beautiful, confronting, comic and just plain deranged. All the while I could not remove the ridiculous grin from my face, such was the audacity with which the director explores the opportunities for experimentation that cinema allows. After one viewing I'm not sure I can speak too intelligently in drawing a cogent conclusion as the ending provides endless possibilities for interpretation.

This is the kind of boundary pushing film I love as it manages to explore a wide ranging spectrum of tone and abstract concepts that could not be fully elucidated in a conventional realist drama.
